Pay-Per-Click, Step-by-Step

The text ads displayed on search engine results are examples of PPC adverts. On Google, these are displayed in the right column, above and below search engine results.

Advertisers bid a certain amount that they are willing to pay when someone clicks on that ad, which determines the position in which that listing will show on results pages – the higher an advertiser is willing to bid, the higher up the ad will show.

Google is currently the leader in PPC, with Yahoo and Bing following behind them. Google search has 80% of market share in South Africa. To achieve success with PPC, it is important to: 

• Set up your campaigns correctly

• Research which keywords your target audience is using to search for your products (and services)

Important PPC terms:

Cost per click (CPC): This is the rand value you pay. CPC is best for banner ads and PPC-sponsored links.

Pay-per-click (PPC): The method of payment for CPC.

Cost per thousand impressions (CPM): For example, R50 per 10,000 impressions means a CPM of R5.

Click-through rate (CTR): The number of clicks divided by the number of impressions.

Conversion rate (CR): The number of actions (or goals) completed divided by the number of clicks received. For example, you set up a goal for “sign up for the newsletter” on the home page of your website. If ten people click your ad to go to the home page and two people sign up for the newsletter, your CR is 20%.

Landing page: The destination page on your website that viewers are sent to once they click on your ad. This does not have to be the homepage. For example, www.news24.com is the home page, but www.news24.com/world would be your landing page for a sponsored link promoting world news on News24. You can create a dedicated landing page to send paid advertising to, to make sure those visitors convert or do what you want them to do.

Pay per action (PPA): Payment is only made once someone takes the prescribed action – makes a phone call, completes the contact form or makes a purchase. PPA costs are higher than PPC because they ensure that you achieve your goals.

Return on investment (ROI): The profit made divided by the cost of the PPC campaign. It’s best to look at the entire campaign rather than individual products to get a more holistic view of the performance of the campaign.
